The Market Town of Kirkby Stephen lies at the head of the Eden Valley. The town was granted its Market Charter in 1361, and still holds a Monday Market. From the Market Square there are many narrow winding passageways, some leading down to the famous Franks Bridge.

The Square has a number of historical buildings. The Parish Church, dating back to Saxon times, is know as the ‘Cathedral of the Dales.’ The famous Settle to Carlisle Railway stops at a Station one and a half miles away from the town, and there are a number of interesting antique and curio shops as well as tea rooms.
