Sedbergh is an attractive Market Town nestling at the foot
of the towering Howgill Fells. Dating back to Roman times, it
has a site of a Motte and Bailey Castle on grassy mound known
as Castlehaw, situated just behind the town. Sedbergh also has
a fine Norman church which quite unusually acts as a Church of
England and Catholic place of worship. Sedbergh was granted
its market charter in the 13th Century.
The town still retains much character with its cobbled
yards and historic houses, many of these associated with its
past woollen trade.
Sedbergh has four main rivers with available fishing areas
or for those who wish to enjoy the beauty of this Western Dale
there are many walks and tours including the famous Dales
Way.
Sedbergh is also the home to one of the top private schools
in the United Kingdom. The school's attractive
buildings are found around the town.
